By tire size: what changes the job

Why size, not pressure, is the problem

A 35x12.5R17 or a 315/70R17 holds far more air than a stock 265/70R17. Pressure is the same order of magnitude; volume is not. Filling four of them from trail pressure back to road pressure is the most sustained workload most owners will ever ask of a portable compressor, and it is a heat problem before it is a pressure problem.

That is why the maximum-PSI figure on the box tells you almost nothing here. Every unit in this category exceeds the pressure a 35 needs by a wide margin.

The two specifications that matter

Duty cycle — how long the unit runs before it must cool — decides whether you finish four tires or stand around waiting for a thermal cut-off to reset. Airflow, expressed in CFM, decides how long each tire takes.

The reviews on this site publish both where we could measure them. The VIAIR 88P, for example, is rated for a 25-minute duty cycle at 30 PSI, which is the kind of figure to compare; box claims rarely mention it at all.

What this ranking is, and is not

Our published fill times are for a 225/65R17 and a 265/70R17, not for a 35-inch tire — we have not measured one on our bench. So this page ranks the units we tested on the attributes that scale to a bigger tire, and says so rather than quoting a fill time we never took.

The pick, and the case against it

VIAIR 88P tops this ranking. The most honest 12V compressor for the money: fast, robust and reliable, as long as you accept a screw-on chuck and an analog gauge that reads about 2 PSI high.

What you accept with it: no auto shut-off, so you must watch the gauge and stop it yourself; analog gauge read roughly 2 psi high against our calibrated tester.

Milwaukee M12 Cordless Tire Inflator 2475-20 is close behind on this weighting. Where it wins: Auto shut-off stopped within 0.5 PSI of the target at every pressure tested. If that matters more to you than the winner’s strengths, it is the better buy for your use.
