How long does it take to inflate a tire with a portable pump?

The three variables

That is why "fills a tire in 90 seconds" claims are close to meaningless unless they state the tire size and the starting and finishing pressures. A number quoted without them is a marketing figure.

• How much air is missing: a 5 PSI top-up and a fill from flat are entirely different jobs.
• Tire volume: a 225/65R17 passenger tire and a 35-inch truck tire are not close.
• The inflator’s airflow, not its maximum pressure rating.

What we have measured

We publish the conditions alongside every fill time in our reviews, because a figure without them cannot be compared. From our published test notes:

• VIAIR 88P: roughly 1 minute 40 seconds to take a 225/65R17 tire from 28 to 36 PSI, and about 6 minutes 30 seconds from flat to 35 PSI on a 265/70R17 all-terrain, in 68°F weather.
• Every review states its own fill times for the same reference tire and pressures, so the numbers are directly comparable between reviews.

The duty cycle is the other half

A fast inflator that has to stop and cool is not fast overall. If you are filling four tires, the question is not the time for one tire but whether the unit completes the set before the thermal cut-off. That figure — the duty cycle — is published in the specs of the reviews on this site and is the one to read before an off-road or RV purchase.

Rule-of-thumb expectations

For ordinary passenger-car top-ups, most competent portable inflators will restore a few PSI in well under a minute per tire and finish a set in a few minutes. Filling from flat is where the difference between units becomes dramatic, and where a truck tire can turn into a twenty-minute job. If you deal with flat tires rather than slow leaks, weight airflow and duty cycle heavily and ignore the maximum pressure rating.
