How to air down tires for off-roading (and air back up)
Airing down is the single biggest traction change you can make off-road, and it is free. It is also the reason an off-road inflator needs a duty cycle rather than a maximum pressure rating.
What lowering pressure actually does
Letting air out makes the tire deform more, so the contact patch gets longer and wider. That spreads the vehicle’s weight over more surface, which is why a deflated tire floats over sand and grips rock instead of spinning on it. It also softens the ride considerably on washboard surfaces.
The cost is that the tire runs hotter at speed and the sidewall is more exposed to pinching. Aired-down tires are for trails, not for the highway home.
How far to go
There is no single number: it depends on vehicle weight, tire construction and the surface. The table below is the usual starting range that off-road drivers work from, but the tyre sidewall and the vehicle manual are the authorities, and load-carrying capacity falls as pressure falls.
- Gravel and forest roads: a modest drop, often 5–10 PSI below road pressure.
- Rock and technical trails: a larger drop, commonly into the low 20s or high teens.
- Sand and dunes: the lowest pressures, sometimes into the mid-teens, where bead retention becomes the limiting factor.
- Never air down below the point the tyre manufacturer or vehicle manual warns about, and never drive aired-down at highway speed.
Doing it evenly
A tire deflator removes air from all four tires to the same pressure at once, which is faster and more even than doing them one at a time with a gauge. A gauge that reads accurately at 15–20 PSI matters more here than at road pressure: this is the one job where you are deliberately working at the bottom of the scale.
If you are doing it by hand, set one tire first, then match the others to it rather than chasing a number on each.
Airing back up is the harder half
Restoring four tires from trail pressure to road pressure is the most demanding job most owners will ask of a portable inflator. It is a sustained, high-pressure workload, and heat is what ends it: a unit with a ten-minute duty cycle may need a cooldown partway through the fourth tire.

What PSI should I air down to for off-roading?
There is no universal figure. Gravel often needs only a modest drop, rock and sand progressively more. Start from the vehicle manual and the tyre manufacturer’s minimum, work from the ranges above, and adjust for how the vehicle behaves.
Can I drive home on aired-down tires?
No. Low pressure at highway speed builds heat quickly and risks damaging the tire or losing the bead. Air back up before you reach the road.
How long does it take to air four tires back up?
