PumpGauge exists for one reason: to give drivers, cyclists and weekend adventurers honest data about portable air compressors before they spend money.
We are not a manufacturer, a retailer or a marketplace. We do not sell the products we review, and no brand has ever paid us to rank a product higher. Every review on this site is written by our editorial team after buying or borrowing a unit at retail, measuring it against the same test protocol, and living with it long enough to know what breaks first.
How we make money
We may earn affiliate commissions from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to readers. When you buy a product through a link on this site, the retailer may pay us a small percentage. The price you pay is exactly the same, and a commission never changes a score, a ranking or a verdict.
Commission rates vary wildly between products — some pay us nothing at all — yet our rankings are decided before any commercial data is attached to the article. If the best product in a category pays us no commission, it still wins.
Our editorial standards
- Products are purchased at retail or borrowed for review, never gifted in exchange for coverage.
- We publish measured numbers — fill times, gauge accuracy, noise and duty-cycle limits.
- We list cons in the same place as pros, at the top of every review.
- No sponsored posts, no paid placements, no brand-supplied rankings.
- Reviews are re-checked when a product is revised or its price changes materially.
How we test
Each compressor is timed inflating the same 225/65R17 tire from 28 to 36 PSI, then from flat to 35 PSI. Gauge readings are verified against a calibrated digital tester at 15, 30 and 45 PSI. We record noise at one metre, hose and cord length, thermal cut-off behaviour, and how the unit behaves when a second tire is inflated immediately after the first.
Long-term notes cover hardware that only shows up in daily use: corroded 12V plugs, cracked hose ends, rattling pressure gauges and the availability of replacement parts.
