“Stops itself” means the maker says the tool stops releasing air at a set pressure without you watching it. A dash means the manufacturer does not publish the field — we do not fill it in.

Automatic or manual: the real trade

An automatic deflator is a spring-loaded valve set to a target pressure. You screw one onto each valve, and it hisses until the tire reaches that pressure, then closes. Four of them work at once, which is the whole appeal: you set them going and do something else.

A manual tool — a gauge with a bleed, or a dedicated deflator — is slower per tire but lets you pick the pressure as you go, watch it fall, and stop exactly where you want. That is the difference that decides most purchases: automatic deflators save attention, manual ones give you control. If you run the same pressure on the same tires every weekend, automatic wins. If the surface changes, or you are still learning what your vehicle likes, a manual tool is the one that will not fight you.

Almost every automatic deflator is sold as a set of four, and almost every manual one is sold as a single tool. That is a specification you can read off the table above before you buy, and it is the fastest way to tell the two families apart.

What the published specifications do not tell you

Air-down time. It is the number every buyer wants and the number manufacturers do not publish — a deflator is a fixed orifice, so the time depends on tire volume, the starting and finishing pressures and whether four tools are running at once. Any single “seconds per tire” figure would be meaningless without those, and we have not measured one, so we do not print one.

What you can compare is the mechanical set: whether the stop point is adjustable or fixed, what the maker states as its range, whether a gauge is included, how the tool attaches to the valve and how many come in the box. Those are the fields in the table, and they are read from the makers’ own listings.

One consequence worth knowing: a fixed-pressure automatic deflator usually cannot be altered on the trail. If the maker publishes a range, that range is what it can be set to before you leave — not something you change at the trailhead.

Accuracy is the other half-published field: only 6 of the 12 tools here publish any figure at all. Every preset set does, and they cluster between ±1 and ±2 PSI, which is the tolerance on where the tool stops. One 4-tire system quotes ±1% of full scale for its gauge instead. The manual tools publish a gauge range — ARB states 1–60 PSI and ALL-TOP 0–250 PSI — which is what the gauge can read, not a tolerance, and the two are not comparable.

Deflation speed is the spec almost nobody publishes. Only Staun states a figure, and its own listing is inconsistent about it, giving “around three minutes” for 32 to 18 PSI in one place and a “~4 minutes” heading in another. We quote that as the inconsistency it is rather than picking the friendlier number.

The other half of the job: reading the pressure properly

Airing down sets a low pressure, and low pressures are the hard end of a gauge scale. A gauge built around the 30–40 PSI a car runs reads trail pressures near the bottom of its dial, where the graduations are tightest and the error is proportionally largest. If you are setting 15–20 PSI deliberately, you want a gauge whose range puts that figure mid-scale.

Are automatic tire deflators accurate?

Stop-pressure accuracy is the maker’s claim, and we have not verified it — we have not tested any of these tools. What this page can tell you is what each manufacturer publishes about its own stop pressure, which is in the table above and on each profile page. If a maker publishes no figure at all, that absence is worth weighing.

How long does it take to air down four tires?

We do not publish a figure because we have not measured one and the manufacturers do not publish comparable ones. In principle a deflator is a fixed orifice, so time scales with how much air has to leave. Four automatic deflators working at once is the fastest arrangement; a single manual tool applied tire by tire is the slowest. That ordering is mechanical, and it is the honest answer.

Do I need a deflator with a gauge?

A gauge in the tool is convenient and saves a step, but it is not a substitute for a separate gauge used as the final check. A deflator is built to move air quickly, and the pressure it reads while hissing is not the settled pressure. For the pressure you actually drive on, measure separately.

Can I use one deflator on all four tires?

Yes, and it is what most manual tools are designed for: use it on one valve at a time. A set of four exists so that all of them can run at once, which is what makes the automatic family fast.

Is an off-road deflator worth it over just pressing the valve core?

Pressing the core with a tool works on one tire and takes both hands plus a gauge to check. Over four tires, repeatedly, that is the job a deflator exists to remove. If you air down once a year, it is a luxury; if you do it most weekends, it is the difference between a routine and a chore.

Every value on this page is read from the manufacturer’s own product listing, linked below and on each profile page. Nothing is estimated and nothing is aggregated from retailers. Where a manufacturer does not publish a field, it is shown as “—” rather than filled in.

What is not on this list. A few named-brand deflators are missing because we could not read a manufacturer specification for them, and we would rather list the 12 tools we can attribute than pad the table with rows copied from a marketplace listing. Smittybilt — an automatic deflator many people will look for — publishes no page our reader could reach. VIAIR’s own site was unavailable to us, and the only VIAIR deflating product we could verify is an inline-gauge coil hose rather than a deflator tool, so it is not here either. Boulder Tools and CKAuto sell deflators without a manufacturer page we can cite. Two brand entries below point at an Australian store, so their prices are in AUD and the table shows no USD figure rather than a converted guess.
