The Avid Power AC/DC Portable Air Compressor refuses to pick a side, shipping with both a wall plug and a 12V cigarette lead — and in our testing both modes perform well enough that the compromise is easy to accept.
Who the dual-power design is for
This compressor makes sense for two kinds of owner. The first is a household with several vehicles that wants one inflator for garage and roadside duty. The second is a driver who has been burned by a dead 12V socket or a blown accessory fuse and wants a fallback that works from a wall outlet.
It is less compelling if you only ever inflate tires in a parking lot. In that case a lighter, faster 12V unit such as the VIAIR 88P is the better tool, and a cordless model like the Ryobi P737D is more convenient still.
Measured performance
We ran the same 225/65R17 tire in both power modes, at 68°F, and repeated each test three times.

The dual-mode performance is closer than we expected, and the AC mode's advantage is mostly about staying consistent across several tires. On DC, the fourth consecutive tire took around 10% longer than the first; on AC the difference was barely measurable.
The gauge is the weak link. Ours read consistently high by about 2.5 PSI in both modes, which is typical for analog dials in this price bracket but still means you should finish with a separate gauge. At 86 dB it is loud, though not the worst offender we have tested.
Build quality and daily life
At 4.9 lb with a hard plastic housing, this is a substantial tool rather than a glovebox accessory. The 3 ft hose plus 1 ft extension reaches all four corners of a sedan comfortably, and the hose fittings are crimped metal rather than the push-fit plastic that fails on cheap inflators.
The storage case is a cut above the usual soft bag: a moulded clamshell with dedicated slots for the AC cord, the 12V lead and the adapters. The 5 ft AC cord is the one real design annoyance — in a typical garage you will need an extension lead to reach the car.
Ownership impressions after four months are positive. The motor note is unchanged, fill times have not drifted, and the thermal cut-off has engaged twice during long sessions and reset itself without fuss, which is exactly what the 15-minute duty cycle is there to enforce.
Where it falls short

Slightly. A 28 to 36 PSI top-up took 3 minutes 05 seconds on 120V AC against 3 minutes 20 seconds on 12V DC. The bigger difference is consistency: AC output barely changes as the motor heats up, while the 12V run slowed by roughly 10% on the fourth tire.
Can I use the Avid Power compressor indoors?
Only with ventilation. The motor is brushed and produces sparks, and the housing gets hot near the cylinder. Use it in a garage or driveway, never in a closed living space, and let it cool before storing it.
Does it have automatic shut-off at a set pressure?
No. The Avid Power uses a large analog gauge and a simple on/off switch. You stop the compressor at your target pressure and confirm with a separate tire gauge — ours read about 2.5 PSI high.
Is it suitable for inflating air mattresses and pool toys?
