Two-in-one, or two tools?

An inflator’s gauge is for getting close; a separate gauge is for setting the pressure you actually want. On the units we tested, on-board gauges read up to two pounds high, which is enough to leave every tire on the car slightly over. That is why our reviews finish every fill with a separate gauge, and why this site publishes a gauge comparison as well.

If you want one tool, choose the inflator on the accuracy of its gauge and accept that you will still want a cheap second opinion in the glovebox. If you want the pressure right, buy the inflator on airflow and duty cycle and put a couple of dollars into a gauge.
