VIAIR 88P vs Ryobi P737D 18V: corded speed against cordless convenience
These two topped our test group for different reasons: the VIAIR 88P is the fastest 12V compressor we have measured on a routine top-up, and the Ryobi P737D is the cordless unit we reach for first because there is nothing to plug in.
Both were timed on the same 225/65R17 tire at the same ambient temperature, and both were checked against the same calibrated reference gauge.

Inflation speed
The VIAIR is the quicker tool: 1 min 40 s against 2 min 20 s for the same 28 to 36 PSI top-up, and 4 min 20 s against 6 min 15 s from completely flat. That 40-second gap on a top-up is pleasant rather than decisive, but the 115-second gap on a flat tire is the difference between a quick stop and a long one. The VIAIR also did it with 1.8 CFM against the Ryobi’s 0.57 CFM, which is why it pulls ahead as the tire empties.
Gauge accuracy and noise
The Ryobi wins this one clearly. Its digital preset stopped within 0.5 PSI of the target at every pressure we tested, while the VIAIR’s analog dial read about 2 PSI high. Neither is unusual at the price, but the Ryobi removes the arithmetic entirely, and it is also the quieter of the two at 82 dB against 88 dB.
Power, runtime and ownership
This is where the two diverge completely. The VIAIR clamps directly to the battery and works on any car you borrow, with no battery platform to buy into. The Ryobi is a bare tool: at $49 it is cheaper than the VIAIR only if you already own ONE+ packs, and a battery plus charger pushes the real cost well past it. In exchange you get no cords, unlimited thermal-protected runtime, and four tires per 4.0Ah charge.
Which should you buy?
VIAIR 88P is the faster unit and Ryobi P737D 18V ONE+ has the more accurate gauge. Ryobi P737D 18V ONE+ is the cheaper of the two.
Buy the VIAIR 88P if speed and universality matter most: it is the faster compressor, it works from any battery terminals, and its 25-minute duty cycle finished four consecutive tires in our testing without a cooldown.
Buy the Ryobi P737D if you already own ONE+ batteries. The 40-second penalty per top-up is a fair trade for never dragging a cord across a wet driveway, and its preset accuracy is the better of the two.
