Why tire pressure drops in cold weather

Every autumn, a large number of TPMS lights come on for a reason that is not a puncture: the air inside the tires contracted. Understanding why makes the light much less alarming and the fix much easier.

The short version

Air pressure and temperature are linked: cool the gas inside a fixed volume and the pressure falls. A rough industry rule of thumb is about 1 PSI of change for every 10°F of temperature change, so a 40°F overnight drop — a normal autumn night in much of North America — can take a 35 PSI tire down to about 31 PSI without a single molecule escaping.

That is general physics rather than a measurement from our bench, but it is why the effect repeats every year on schedule.

Why the light comes on now

A tire that was set at the correct pressure in September can be enough below the threshold to trigger a warning after the first genuinely cold morning. Nothing has failed — the tire was already close to the line, and the temperature moved it across.

This is also why a warning that appears on a cold morning and disappears after a few miles of driving is not necessarily a fault. The tire warms as it rolls and the pressure climbs back.

What to do about it

  • Measure with a gauge rather than relying on the dashboard, and measure cold.
  • Top up to the placard pressure in the cold, not to the pressure you used in summer.
  • Do not over-inflate to compensate for a winter that has not happened yet; re-check after the next sharp drop.
  • If one tire keeps reading low while the others are stable, treat it as a leak, not as weather.

The inflation side of the problem

Winter is also when an inflator is hardest to use. Cold stiffens hoses, reduces the output of battery packs, and makes brittle fittings more likely to crack — all reasons our cold-weather scenario ranks build quality and fill speed above maximum pressure.

If you keep a cordless inflator in the car, check its charge before the cold arrives; a lithium pack that reads full in a warm garage can behave very differently after a night at 15°F.
